MONEY, MONEY, MONEY
by Kevin V. Rutherford
A rich man came to Jesus and asked Jesus, "What shall I do that I may inherit eternal life (Mark 10:17)?" After questioning the man for a moment Jesus told him, "Go your way, sell whatever you have and give to the poor (Mark 10:21)." The Bible says the rich man was sad, and "went away sorrowful, for he had great possessions."
Jesus then turned to His disciples and said, "It is easier for a camel to go through the eye of a needle for a rich man to enter the kingdom of God (Mark 10:25)." The disciples were greatly astonished at what Jesus had said. They asked Jesus, "Who then can be saved (Mark 10:26)?" To this question Jesus replied, "...with God all things are possible (Mark 10:27)."
The point of all of this is that while it is not impossible for a rich man to be saved, it is difficult. So many people think money is the answer to all of their problems. While money is important it must be kept in perspective. While money may pay the bills and put food on the table it is possible that too much money may corrupt an individual. Perhaps people should learn to thank God for what they have and quit worrying about everything they don't have (Matthew 6:33). Isn't this what Paul meant when he said, "Now godliness with contentment is great gain. For we brought nothing into this world, and it is certain we can carry nothing out. And having food and clothing, with these we shall be content (1 Timothy 6:6-8)."
