The church of Christ wears the description found in Romans 16:16. The term “church of Christ” denotes ownership.
Christ is the founder and owner of the church (Matthew 16:18).
-------------Origin:------------
Jesus Christ promised to build His church (Matthew 16:18).
His church is the one established on the first Jewish Pentecost day following the resurrection of Christ
(Acts 2).
-----------Authority:----------
Jesus Christ is the head of the church (Ephesians 1:22, 23; Colossians 1:18). He rules today through His word (John 12:48).
His word is that which He revealed to His apostles by inspiration through the Holy Spirit (John 16:12-15).
The inspired writers of the first century recorded those words which have been preserved for us today in the Bible (1 Corinthians 2:13).
The Bible, which is the inspired word of God, is the religious standard of authority which governs the church of Christ.
It is completely sufficient for “doctrine, reproof, correction, and instruction in righteousness” (2 Timothy 3:15-17).
The Bible only, must be our guide. We must not follow the doctrines and commandments of men (Matthew 15:9; Romans 10:17).
For I testify unto every man that heareth the
words of the prophecy of this book, If any man shall add unto these things, God
shall add unto him the plagues that are written in this book. And if any
man shall take away from the words of the book of this prophecy, God shall take
away his part out of the book of life, and out of the holy city, and from the
things which are written in this book. (Rev 28:18,19)
-----------Worship-------------
The church of Christ does not clutter its simple worship service with the traditions of men, nor does it follow the modern entertainment worship trends.
The church of Christ worships God in spirit and in truth (John 4:24).
The truth is God’s Word (John 17:17).
The Word of God, which is the Bible, must be the standard which guides worship.
-------Organization:----------
Jesus Christ is the head of the church
(Colossians 1:18).
He rules over the church through the word which He revealed
(John 12:48).
Elders fulfill specific qualifications
(1 Timothy 3 and Titus 1).
The elders rule over the local congregation of which they are a part
(1 Peter 5:2). This makes each congregation autonomous.
Serving under the oversight of the elders are the evangelist
(2Timothy 4:5), the deacons (1Timothy 3:8-13), and all other members.
--------Membership:----------
The body of Christ is the church
(Ephesians 1:22, 23).
One enters Christ through baptism
Galatians 3:27).
When one is baptized the Lord adds him to the church
(Acts 2:47).
Thus one does not become a member of the church of Christ without being baptized.
Being a member of the body of Christ is essential to salvation (Ephesians 5:23; Acts 20:28).
Before one becomes a candidate for baptism he must hear the Word of God and believe it
(Romans 10:17).
His faith ought to be one that will cause him to repent of his sins
(Acts 2:38).
Certainly one truly convicted will not be ashamed to confess his faith before men
(Roman 10:9-17).
